Smartphones within Education.

The constant tap-tapping of fingers eager to explore the invented world of a smartphone, an everlasting trend that has evolved in the 21st century. A modern device that has kept the entire world engaged with its presence, distancing one from the ongoing reality of life. Preferably wooing the world with unlimited leisure through the numerous options. In fact, it is a fascinating product that would be unmissable to have even for student life - a device that might enhance one’s opportunity to greatness. Lately, it has been brought to attention by The Guardian that banning smartphones from classrooms could have a negative impact on education.

Using a smartphone during lessons is considered the biggest distraction. Reportedly, it has been predicted that roughly around 2.6 billion people around the world is going to become smartphone users. Lecturers frown upon them being visible or used by a student in their lectures for leisure purposes. From the students' perspective, it has made their university life much simpler, enabling them to interact well with the lecturers and the lesson. “I think it's important that people are able to use smartphones because sometimes it’s really difficult to engage with the teachers", said Amber Barson.

It prevents their sweats from streaming down their anxious faces and their hands from aching during the lectures because one can take images of the PowerPoint slides without the risk of missing out important points. “If the lecturer is going through a PowerPoint quite quickly. You wouldn’t have a chance to write that down whilst you can just take a photo of the screen”, expressed Tamara. It is an even greater help for those that just rely on their memory. “I think it’s just better because we’re not going to be able to memorise everything on the slides”, said Bini.

At the same time, having the option to use video memos and a number of apps are seen to be just as handy for educational purposes. At times students like Afiona find it useful to record her lectures, preventing her from having to bear the pain that circulates in the head due to intense concentration to remember vital aspects of the lesson. “I can still study without my smartphone, but I think it’s much easier and helpful”, she admitted. It also helps students to reflect back and refresh their memory. “The voice memo is incredibly useful for people who want to record their lessons to remember them”, expressed, Abi Miller.

The relevant apps like the note app, provided through the app store can also be the most beneficial feature of a smartphone in a student’s life. It allows the user to write important notes anywhere at any time without having to constantly worry about making any writing or spelling errors as well as not having to rely on their memories either. “Well it’s really good to have on the go, remind me of everything that is important”, said Abbey Pallett.

However, despite the positive uses a smartphone has within education, it can still have some negative aspects that could create distressing problems for students. The risk of it getting lost, having a limited amount of space and the majority of students being too invested in their phones. “It’s obviously zapping everyone’s attention span.”, said Amber Barson.
The limited space in a smartphone is known to be 320GB and, that is currently only accessible in the Saygus V2 smartphone.

Overall, although the smartphones may be known to distract people from important matters and have its limitations, it can still come in handy and benefit an individual when it comes to their studies, making their educational life easier and less complicated.
