The Deep Freeze of 2011

Last month we had an entire week of icy roads, and several feet of snow. The local newscasters named it "The Deep Freeze of 2011". Atlanta pretty much shut down for a few days.

Up North this would be likely be considered a normal winter. When my family lived in Michigan, I probably walked in snow this deep to get to the bus stop every day.

But this is Georgia, where the news media sees one snowflake, and panics. The public then takes the cue to stock up on milk and bread. All week I had to listen to the local news urging everyone to "stay home stay home stay home stay home". After a while they all sounded like the grown-ups in the Charlie Brown TV specials ("whah whah whah whah-whah whah whah.....")

Here's some photos of the snow. Some were taken at work, some at home.

The cat in one of the photos belongs to my neighbor. It was amusing to watch her try to navigate the snow. (Upon coming home that week I spotted her pawprints on my deck steps. She probably raced up to my front door one day and meowed her head off hoping I was home...)

  1. The Bassets were shoulder deep in it. They didn't know what to think! I believe we might get about an inch tomorrow night and/or Thursday, but it should melt fast enough.
