When Home Feels...Like a Funhouse

Well, I've been on a little hiatus from here. Moved at the beginning of the month and haven't set up Internet access yet.

It's been a bit of an adventure since moving into my apartment. I love the idea of having a tub (epsom salts baths are great, so if you're thinking of moving, consider a place with a bathtub!) And at first I hated the shutters on my windows--they're old, and the slats don't quite close properly. But when I opened them and then the windows behind them, it reminded me of a theater playhouse. Or those windows in Paris. Okay, my mind plays strange tricks on me. :)

Still haven't quite gotten used to the slanty floors. The first week I slept in fear of falling out of the bed! So I turned the bed to elevate the head rather than one side of the bed. (If you've ever lived in or walked through an older home, you're used to sagging or sloped floors.) I bought a clothes rack to hold some of my clothes since the bar in the closet is too low for dresses and stuff. BAD IDEA. Late one night an arm of the rack gave way and everything fell to the floor. I screamed. Hope I didn't scare the neighbor downstairs. :O

Also haven't figured out the kitchen yet. This is the first time I've had a kitchen with pantries only. There's the under-sink cabinet, and that's it. So I'm learning to be creative with my space, and wondering if I pared down my belongings enough. "Make it work", as Tim Gunn would say.

So, I'm having a love/hate relationship with this apartment right now.

  1. Carrie, can you put something extra under the feet of your bed to level it out? Sorry about your clothes rack issues. We had that happen many times with a rack in our laundry room and gave up and attached a shower rod to the two narrow walls (in studs, of course); and now we no longer fear the great crashes.

    I like your Paris comment.

Btw, you're still invited to do your laundry here. Just call and let me know when you want to do it so it doesn't clash with one of our heavy laundry days. You can use our detergent, so don't bring any unless you're picky about your brand.

    Love you!

  2. Thanks for the tip! :) I've been scratching my head on this one, because the ceiling slopes, too, and this limits greatly where I can put things like that.
